Witchy Women

By

October has just begun, but we are already getting in the Halloween spirit. Pumpkins have been picked, fake spider webs hung, and costumes chosen. Now we’re ready make some special Halloween treats, starting with these Wicked Candy Bar Cupcakes, and since we love to share, we’re showing you exactly how we’re making them, so that you can make them with (or for) your children, grandchildren, or your friends. This fun how-to will yield 15 wickedly delicious cupcakes. Let’s have some fun together, y’all!

For starters, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 8 fun-size Milky Way candy bars, divided
  • 3/4 cup plus 5 tablespoons, divided unsalted butter
  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 (4-oz) bars chopped semi-sweet chocolate
  • 15 chocolate wafer cookies
  • 15 sugar ice cream cones
  • 2 cups confectioner’s sugar, sifted
  • green food coloring
  • black licorice laces
  • 30 red cinnamon candies
  • candy corn

Bake the Cupcakes

Preheat the oven to 350 °F, place 15 paper baking cups in muffin pans, fill any empty cups half-full with water, and set aside. Melt 5 candy bars and 2 tablespoons butter in a heavy saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth, then let the mixture cool.

In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Cream together the sugar and 1/4-cup plus 2 tablespoons of softened butter in a large mixing bowl at medium speed with an electric mixer until well blended. Add the egg, beating just until blended.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture, alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Beat at a low speed just until it’s blended after each addition. Beat in the melted candy bar mixture and the half-teaspoon of vanilla. Spoon the batter evenly into the baking cups, filling them two-thirds full.

Bake the cupcakes until a wooden pick inserted in the centers of the cupcakes comes out clean, about 18 minutes. Remove them from the pan, and let them cool completely on wire racks.

Make the Witchy Green Buttercream

Place 1 tablespoon of the butter and 3 candy bars in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on medium power for 2 minutes or until soft. Stir the mixture until smooth.

Now, beat the remaining softened butter (1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons) until creamy in a medium mixing bowl with an electric mixer. Add the confectioners’ sugar and warm melted candy mixture, beating until the frosting is smooth and fluffy. Beat in 6 drops of green food coloring until blended.

Make the Witch Hats

Place the chopped chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave it at medium power for 2 minutes or until it’s soft, stirring until smooth.

Place the wafer cookies on a rimmed baking sheet, and using a small paintbrush, paint a thick layer of chocolate around the bottom edges of the cones. You can also dip the bottom edge right into your bowl of chocolate, if you prefer that method.

Center the bottoms of the cones on the cookies, and refrigerate them until they are set, about 15 minutes.

Bonus: If you want, microwave the remaining chocolate on medium power for 30 seconds to thin it out. Paint the outsides of the cones with the melted chocolate, and refrigerate them until they’re set, about 20 minutes.

Start by frosting the tops of the cooled cupcakes with a thick layer of the Witchy Green Buttercream frosting. Refrigerate the frosted cupcakes until frosting is firm, if desired, about 15 minutes.

Next up is a trip to the licorice hair stylist! Cut the licorice laces into 1/2-inch and 2-inch lengths; place the short pieces for bangs and the long pieces on the sides for the hair. Spooky chic, right?

No witch is complete without her chapeau, so it’s time to top each cupcake witch with her witch hat.

Now for the finishing touches! We’ve got to show just how wicked these witches are, so we’re placing cinnamon candies on the cupcakes for her evil eyes and candy corn for her snaggly teeth.

So the jury is out! Are they cute or creepy? Let us know your vote in the comments below. Either way, they taste scary good! Have a wicked good Halloween!
